The Shadow
Pouring out of the Iron Citadel at Kodor, this river provides sustenance, if not pleasure, for the Southern peoples of the area. The Shadow was created as a defensive fortification and as a means of transport between the Plum and Iron Citadels. The river is canalized throughout most of its length and most settlements have grown up from installations around the many Locks. The Shadow is not a seasonal river, though several of its tributaries are. The water flowing out of the underworld is unsustaining to the living and it is not considered potable until well into Makuria. Agriculture along the lower Shadow is limited as it does not flood, but groves of olive survive close to the river as do maize fields. Kodor and Makuria sit along its banks.
Eventually it reaches Soba, where it joins The Serpent.
